New Console developer accounts can claim a one-time $5 in free API credits after completing SMS verification

Requires completing both email and SMS verification at platform.claude.com, then clicking 'Claim' in the console. The credits expire 14 days after you click Claim (not 14 days after account creation). $5 is roughly equivalent to 5 million input tokens on Haiku 4.5, or roughly 1 million input tokens on Opus 4.5.

There's no standing free tier — just a one-time $5 for new accounts, to be used within 14 days. There's also the Anthropic Startup Program (up to $25,000) and a six-month Claude Max 20x plan for open-source maintainers, but both require a separate application and review — they don't fall under 'get it just by signing up.'
